Abstract
This study aims to summarize the history and contents of academic discussions on the naming of the East Sea, evaluate their achievements, and propose topics that require further research in light of new changes in the environment of toponymic uses. One of the greatest achievements of academic discussions over the past 30 years is to have the international community recognize the disputes of the East Sea naming and the need to resolve them, with the development of discourses of universal human values such as social justice, peace, and human rights. As a realistic solution, discussions were conducted on the feasibility and benefits of the use of the two names together. As changes in the environment of toponymic uses, this study took specific note on the advancement of the potential of digital technology to contribute to resolving dispute names, the trend of respecting cultural values and demanding social changes, the emergence of the influential MZ generation, and the increased interest in the global environmental changes. The direction of future research is summarized as elements of sustainable geographical naming that can be accepted by all generations.
