Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the geographic location of Satyrorum and its change on Western old maps. For this, a literature study was conducted on the character of the monster-human satyr and the location of the satyrorum, the dwelling place. And by examining maps made from the 13th to the 18th century, the location of the satyrorum was classified and its meaning was grasped. As a result of the analysis, Satyrorum is located in Ethiopia on the medieval map, which can be interpreted as a typical space for others according to the medieval spatial schema. And at the beginning of the Renaissance period, the Satyrorum moved to Southeast Asia, according to the coordinates mentioned in Ptolemy’s Geography. Mercator and Ortelius moved the Satyrorum to an island in the north of Japan. Afterwards, Nicolas Sanson referred to Jeju island as Satyrorum. However, the maps of Nicolas Sanson are historical maps, it is confirmed that they cannot be regarded as typical of East Asian otherization.
